About Us
Straight Up Jazz started with Bob Gustavson and Rich Kimura who began playing jazz in the Tri-Cities area of the Columbia Basin in 1986. The two of them have held the group together through many changes over the decades, moving from duets to quintets, with lots of different drummers and bassists. We've had the privilege of playing with so many talented folks! The group has always enjoyed promoting jazz as an art form in the Tri-Cities and surrounding area. And, there are so many more venues to play than there were 22 years ago!
Bob trained at Cornish College and Rich was originally classically trained on piano studying under Greta Von Brederlow. Both are also engineers by day. Dave Campell has played for many decades in a variety of bands and works in the nuclear industry. Ben Chambers holds a Bachelors degree in Music from the University of Idaho. They have a variety of sounds ranging from cool jazz piano and sparkling Brazilian bossa nova to relaxing ballads and soulful small combo vocal sounds. They liven up social gatherings of all kinds. Enjoy music from artists such as Miles Davis, Stan Getz, Milt Jackson, Sonny Rollins, Chick Corea, Duke Ellington, Cannonball Adderly, Kenny Dorham, Pat Metheny, and many other great artists.

At that time very few people were playing jazz in the Tri-Cities, or much less all styles of bebop, cool, fusion, blues, and latin. But there was a strong dixieland jazz society following in the Tri-Cities at that time.
