Principles for a Handyman or Handywoman

It really pays to figure things out yourself!  For us, it is usually fear of the unknown or laziness that keeps us from doing-it-ourselves.  But after we figure something out, there is great satisfaction and when the problem arises again we are ready!

A handyman isn't someone who knows it all already, but is willing to learn about something whenever the opportunity arises.

Start with small projects, then work your way up.

Read some old handyman books for home and car repair, they're cheap at garage sales!

Save money by starting on small projects to build up your confidence.

If you're feeling unmotivated, or lazy, put it aside and make yourself get up!

If you feel lost, or overwhelmed, put it aside and just focuse on taking the next step.

Don't have a bad attitude about repairing something, think of it as learning something, a skill, that you can use for the rest of your life.

Planning for a job means thinking it through before starting a job, but don't worry if you missed something, just backup and take care of it.

It's worth to think of my family, my wife, and children, first and being able to provide for them should problems arise.   Doing it myself makes me more valuable at home.  I don't want my wife always going to McDonalds because it's easier, so I shouldn't go call the plumber to fix the toilet!

Buy spares parts for car and home when your at the store, it'll save you some trips later.  Don't by too many.

Talk to your friends, and get their input or help.

Know your limits, and hire someone if it is complex or dangerous.
